An Introduction to Academic Writing

A Monstrous Discourse: An Introduction to Academic Writing is a themed writing course designed to help students practice writing as a recursive process (inventing, drafting, revising, and editing). During this course, students look at how monsters shape our culture, our lives, and our writing by examining how monsters reveal our hidden prejudices, repressions, and anxieties about the world and ourselves. Because of their indefinable nature, monsters encourage open-mindedness, productive questioning, careful dissection, and flexible research—all of which are the hallmarks of good writing and scholarship.
